Microsoft launched Dynamics AX 2012 R3 in a virtual event hosted by Christian Pedersen, general manager of AX, from the company’s campus in Washington.

The big news from the event was the official confirmation that AX 2012 R3 will be available on the cloud via Azure.

Mike Ehrenberg, CTO for Microsoft Dynamics, said: “This is the first time any version of AX has been delivered on the cloud and it is a major step forwards for us.

"We are also using cloud technology to transform the support experience by creating an instance that can be shared by the customer, the partner and Microsoft to get to the bottom of a problems.”

Other new functionality includes a more modern POS experience and improvements to supply chain capabilities, including warehouse management and transportation, with the aim of delivering the right product to the customer at the right time.

Hal Howard, corporate vice president, Microsoft Dynamics ERP, outlined the work the company has done on the business intelligence (BI) functionality through solutions such as Power BI.

He said: “We have done a lot of work on the interface, especially on the device experience and we continue to update that for new BI apps such as expenses, timesheets and approvals applications. All of these are available in the Windows Store.”

Howard also talked about how implementing and maintaining AX is much easier.

“With Dynamics Lifecycle Services – which can be deployed and managed in the cloud via Windows Azure – we provide a comprehensive set of tools that are being updated continuously that work from the time you start the deployment to the business transformation stage and then through to the end,” he said.

Dynamics Lifecycle Services also includes the Business Process Modeller, which can either model best practice process from AX 2012 or be customised to a business’s own needs.

Then the Azure deployment portal allows companies to spin up a test environment for the solution and then proactively monitor the health of the solution.

Issue search helps find a solution and then enables these solutions to be downloaded from the cloud. The issue can then be logged and a virtual machine can be spun up so the company can work collaboratively with Microsoft to solve the problem.

Microsoft also discussed the company’s new AX R3 mobile apps.
